한국전 참전용사 여러분

-서울수복 64주년 보은의 잔치-

친애하는 한국전 참전용사 그리고 가족 여러분  

오늘 여러분을 모시고 여러분의 희생과 도움을 상기할  

기회를 같게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다.  

 

64년 전 공산 북한의 남침으로 우리의 조국 대한민국 90%가  

적의 주중에 들어가고 멸망의 직전 한국전 참전용사 여러분들은  

유엔군과 함께 한국전에 참여하고 맥아더 장군의 인천상륙작전  

성공으로 우리를 구해 주셨고 9월 28일 잃었던 수도 서울을 수복하고,  

대한민국 국민들에게 자유와 오늘의 번영을 갖게 해주셨습니다.  

 

그러함에도 한국전 참전용사님 대부분이 작고하시고 우리의  

후세들마저 잊어져 가고 있는 것이 안타까워 이런 잔치를 통해  

여러분들의 희생과 은혜를 잊지 않게 하고자 합입니다 오늘 이곳  

에서 서울수복 64주년 기념행사를 하면서 여러분에게 감사하고  

위로하고자 하는 것은 누구보다 여러분들의 아픈 마음을  

잘 알고 있기 때문입니다  

아시아의 조그마한 나라 한국 사람의 자유를 지켜 주시기 위해  

여러분의 가족 동료 3만6천여 명이 목숨을 잃었고 10만 여명이  

부상을 당했습니다. 그리고 먹을 것 입을 것이 없이 거리에서 헤매던  

수많은 전쟁고아들을 보살펴 주셨습니다.  

본인은 이곳에서 Dean E. Hess.공군대령을 소개하고자 합니다.  

한국인은 Hess 대령을 존경하고 있습니다. 그해 12월 한반도  

통일을 눈앞에 둔 시점에서 중공군이 개입하면서 다시 서울을  

퇴각해야 하는 절박한 상황에서 Hess 대령에게 15대의 C-47  

수송기와 함께 군수 물자와 병사들을 후송하라는 명이 하달되었습니다.  

그러나 Dean E. Hess 대령은 이명을 어기고 사지에 버려져 있는  

1000여명의 전쟁고아들을 한국 남단 섬인 제주도에 먼저 이주  

시켰지만 한국의 혹독한 겨울 추위를 막아줄 집도 옷도 먹을 것도  

없는 황량한 벌판 이였습니다.  

 

그는 이들을 위해 천막을 쳤고 참혹한 전쟁 중에도 불구하고  

미군장병들은 매월 정기적인 기부를 했고 덕분에 Hess 대령은  

이 돈으로 1000명이 넘는 고아들을 돌보면서도 그의 전쟁 의무를  

훌륭하게 수행한 한국전쟁 고아의 아버지입니다.  

 

이 이야기는 당시 여러 분들이 베푼 수많은 사례 중 단 하나의 예일 뿐입니다

전쟁의 폐허 속에서 오늘날 대한민국이 있기 까지 물심양면으로  

도와 오늘 같은 한강의 기적을 만들어 준 여러분 들입니다  

그런 여러 분들에게 어떻게 보답했습니까. 성조기를 불태우고  

한국의 자유를 지켜주신 맥아더 동상을 파괴하려 하고,  

미국을 증오`하면서 주적이고 핵 놀음을 하며 미사일을  

쏘아 올리고 있는 김정은 공산 집단을 옹호하면서 반미  

대모를 하고 있는 일부 군중들을 보면서 여러분의 마음이  

얼마나 아프셨습니까.  

 

 그러나 사랑하는 미국시민 여러분 어느 나라를 막론하고  

소수의 무례한 집단은 있는 법이고 침묵하는 다수보다 불순한  

소수의 소리가 더 크게 보이는 법이고 그런 소수의 무문별한  

소리와 행동이 다수의 목소리를 누를 수 있다는 사실 자체가  

여러분들의 희생의 대가로 주어진 자유의 덕이라 생각합니다.  

 

이러한 소수에 너무 상심하시지 마시고 여러분들의 희생에 감사하고  

있는 대부분의 대한민국 국민 다수가 있다는 것을 기억해 주시길 바랍니다. 

  

우리가 이곳 미국에서 미국의 시민으로 다시 터전을 잡고 살아가고  

있습니다만 조국을 향한 애정과 함께 여러분들의 은혜에 감사하는  

마음은 변함이 없습니다. 

지금 대한민국은 이러한 범죄자들 포합해서 자유를 누리고 있습니다.  

이런 자유가 그저 주어 진 것이 아니고 3만6천 미군전사자를  

포함해서 유엔군 155 천여 명 사상자의 고귀한 희생위에서  

이룩한 것입니다  

지금 6.25 한국전쟁을 모르는 철없는 어린 세대들을 선동하여  

반미 감정을 충동질하고 있는 것은 남한에 침투해있는 북한  

간첩들의 선전 전술 때문이요 결코 국민 전체 국민의 뜻이  

아니라는 것은 누구보다 우리들이 잘 알고 있습니다.  

 

이로 인해 반세기가 넘도록 이어온 한미우호 관계에 금이 간다면 그걸  

기뻐할 자는 우리들의 공적인 북한의 김정은 공산 집단 박에는 없다고 생각합니다.  

아무쪼록 오늘 이런 행사를 통해 좋은 시간을 가지시고 변함없는  

한미 간의 우정을 재확인하는 계기가 되어 주시길 바랍니다.

   Celebrating 64th anniversary of recapture of Seoul

Dear beloved Korean War veterans, servicemen and family,

Our hearts are full as we commemorate the sacrifice and service you have provided for us during the Korean War. Sixty-four years ago, when the ROK was on the verge of surrender as DPRK's onslaught swallowed 90% of the South Korean territory, the UN forces landed in Incheon and reclaimed Seoul on September 28, 1950 under the command of General MacArthur. Because of their success, South Koreans are now living in freedom and prosperity. Sadly, however, most Korean War veterans have now passed on, and the memory of the war is but a distant echo to Korea's younger generations.

We are holding this 64th anniversary celebration to thank you and recognize the tremendous lost and sacrifice that accompanied your service to our country. In the Korean War, 36,000 men died and 100,000 were injured to preserve the freedom of a small Asian country. You provided shelter and food for the wandering war orphans and took them under your wing. In December of 1950, the American army left Seoul to retreat from the advancing Chinese communists army just prior to the unification of the country. Colonel Hess was ordered to send supplies and soldiers to the battlefield on c-47 transport planes. However, he used those planes to evacuate 1,000 war orphans to Jeju Island. The island turned out to be a cold, desolate place with no shelter to protect the children from the harsh winter. Rising to the challenge, Colonel Hess set up tents while other American soldiers made monthly donations in spite of fighting in a miserable war. As a result, he was able to support over 1,000 orphans while successfully completing his war mission.

This story is only one of many that illustrates how Koreans received aid during the war. You helped South Korea miraculously rise from the rubble of war and provided for us both temporally and spiritually.

But how have we repaid those debts? Regrettably, there were incidents of burning the U.S. flag, trying to destroy the statue of McArthur, crying that the United States is the archenemy, and hailing North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

We understand that this is extremely frustrating and upsetting. However, we hope that you come to realize the misrepresentation of the exaggerated media portrayal of an anti-U.S. 10% minority group as the attitude of the majority of Korean citizens. We also hope that you will not be discouraged by this, but remember the 90% majority of Koreans who are grateful for your service and sacrifice.

We are now living here as U.S citizens, and cultivating our lives on the American soil, but our love for our motherland and our grateful hearts have not changed. The Republic of Korea is a land of freedom, but we know that the freedom came only after the 36,000 lost lives of American soldiers, and 155,000 injured U.N. soldiers.

We hope that this event will serve as an opportunity to promote friendly relations between Korea and U.S., and further develop our friendship as neighbors.
