50년 전 한국전쟁 당시 먹을 것을 구걸하는 거리의 한 소년을 자기 아들로 입양한 Roy Paul 대위 는 이 아들을 미국으로 데려 와 워신톤 주 상원 위원이 되어 입지적인 성공을 할 수 있도록 뒷바라지하며 헌신적인 사랑을 주신 분입니다.
양아들 Paul Shin 박사가 처음 워신톤 주 하원 위원으로 당선되었을 때 “나는 나의 양부모 와 미국의 은혜로 다시 태어난 사람입니다. 그 은혜를 갑을 수 있는 기회를 주신 여러분들에게 감사합니다!” 했을 때 미국의 유권자들은 “ 은혜에 감사할 줄 아는 당신의 감사에 대해 감사합니다!” 라 대답했습니다.
이렇게 베풀면서 감사하는 미국이기 때문에 미국은 위대한 나라입니다.
1950년 한국전쟁의 피비린내 나는 소용돌이 속에서 일본으로부터 술을 밀수입하여 폭리를 취하고 있었던 미국 공군대령이 있었다면 지금 여러분은 어떻게 생각 하겠습니까?
그러나 한국민 들은 이 밀수꾼 두목인 Dean E. Hess 대령을 존경하고 있습니다.
그해 12월 한반도 통일을 눈앞에 둔 시점에서 중공군이 개입하면서 다시 서울을 퇴각해야 하는 절박한 상황에서 수많은 병사와 보급 물자를 후송해야 하는 의무를 미뤄두고 Hess 대령은 사지에 버려져 있는 1000여명의 전쟁 고아들을 15대의 C-47 수송기에 태워 한국 남단 섬인 제주도에 이주 시켰지만 한국의 혹독한 겨울 추위를 막아줄 집도 옷도 먹을 것도 없는 황량한 벌판 이였습니다.
아무도 돌보아 줄 수 없는 이 고아들을 돌보기 위해 부하 장병들의 제안을 받아 들여 부대 안에 주막을 차려 놓고 일본에서 술을 밀수입하여 술을 팔기 시작하였습니다.
한잔에 50센트 하는 술값인데도 Hess 대령의 뜻을 알고 있는 대부분의 장병들은 $1-$5 때로는 $10,$20을 놓고 가며 이밀수꾼 두목에게 폭리를 보게 한 것이고 엄격한 군의 감사반도 이 주막에 관한 한 한마디의 질문도 하지 아니 하고 모른 척 해주었든 것입니다.
덕분에 Hess 대령은 이 돈으로 1000명이 넘는 고아들을 돌보면서도 그의 전쟁 의무를 훌륭하게 수행한 한국전쟁 고아의 아버지입니다.
지금도 미국은 세게 도처에서 꺼져 가는 생명에 자비의 손길을 멈추지 않고 있기 때문에 미국은 위대한 나라입니다.

50 years ago during Korean War, Captain Roy Paul saw a Korean boy wandering alone along the streets for food. He adopted him and took him back to U.S. Captain Paul supported him with unconditional love and care until his adopted son was elected to the Washington state senator.
When the adopted son, Dr. Paul Shin, was first elected to the state assembly he said, I was reborn through the opportunities that U.S. provided me and also through my parents grace for adopting me. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to pay back! The voters replied, Thank you for thanking us. U.S is a great country because its people thank as they bestow a great blessing on others.
How would you think of a U.S. Air Force colonel who smuggled liquor from Japan in the midst of a bloody battle and made a fortune? To your surprise, the Koreans love and respect this smuggler, Colonel Dean E. Hess.In
December of 1950, there was a time when the American army had to retreat back to Seoul from the army of Chinese communists right before the unification of the country. Colonel Hess was to send supplies and soldiers to the battlefield on 15 c-47 transport planes but instead he used those planes to evacuate 1,000 war orphan children to Jae Ju Island. However, the island was a cold, desolate place with no shelter to protect them from winter. To take care of these orphans, he set up a tent and smuggled liquor from Japan and sold it to his soldiers.(But he didn't sell more then a glass per person a day.) It cost 50 cents per glass but the soldiers left $1-5 or sometimes $10 or $20. Even the strict inspectors didnt question what they were doing and left them alone. As a result, Colonel Hess was able to support over 1,000 orphans by being the father of Korean War orphans while successfully completing his war mission.
U.S. is great country because it still lends a helping hand to other suffering countries.
