A start-up biotech company in California made an announcement on Wednesday that might work as the opening scene for a political thriller starring California's governor, were he available. The company, BioArts International, has announced that it can clone your pet, as long as that pet is either a dog or a cat and it turns out that you are one of a handful of high bidders.

A decade ago, the first successful cloning of a mammal, a sheep named Dolly, by British scientists, opened a door to the inevitability of genetic duplication of domestic animals closer to our hearts. After a bidding process organized by Start Licensing, the owner of the majority of patents that were filed after Dolly, BioArts International obtained the exclusive use of cloning technology for dogs, cats and endangered species.

The company, recently born out of a cloning business with the quirky name Genetic Savings and Clone that folded in 2006, is proposing a series of online auctions between now and June 18 that will award five winning bidders the opportunity to clone their dogs, living or departed (providing that tissue samples were taken before their deaths). The company has partnered with a South Korean research team, the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, led by Hwang Woo-suk. Hwang and his colleagues at Seoul National University succeeded in the first canine clone, an animal they named Snuppy, in 2005, but the scientist was later disgraced when he was found to have falsified data relating to cloning human embryonic stem cells.

BioArts CEO Lou Hawthorne's discussion of his company's technology goes back and forth between the scientific wonder of producing an animal clone, and the desire to deliver a reliable product. According to him, four cats, amid many failed attempts, have been successfully cloned and given to clients who paid a set price for the procedure. The uncertainty of outcomes was one of the problems with the business, Hawthorne said in New York on Wednesday. "There had been so many moving parts and dynamics, we really bit off more than we could chew." Now, he claims, business will be different. "We are 100% sure that we can deliver five dogs to five families."

The cloning process, according to the company Web site, www.bestfriendsagain.com, takes between three months and a year. The bidding regulations state that each bidder must provide evidence of cash, assets or a credit line of at least $250,000. When asked why he is using an auction to sell cloning procedures, Hawthorne replied, "We didn’t know how to price this, so an auction seemed like the best way to do it."

Just don't expect that any dogs will be cloned on a pro bono basis, which seems to have been a frequent request among people who have contacted BioArts. "I don't think anybody ever calls up Ferarri and says, 'Can I have a free Ferrari?'" Hawthorne said. "Why should it be different for us?"
